Environment and waste management

Port waste management and ship obligations

The port complies with the recommendations and regulations of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission concerning the prevention of marine pollution.

The Maritime Environmental Protection Act requires ships to leave all ship-generated waste and cargo waste at port reception facilities in accordance with the discharge regulations based on the MARPOL Convention. The ship must submit a notification at least 24 hours before arrival or immediately upon departure from the previous port if the voyage time is less than 24 hours. The notification informs the port of destination of the types of ship-generated waste and cargo waste that will be delivered. The notification shall be made to the PortNet system in accordance with the format approved by the Finnish Transport Safety Agency. The waste notification shall be sent to the ship clearance department by e-mail. Based on the notification, service providers shall be ordered for waste for which there is no reception point in the port.

This does not apply to ships exempted from the obligation to deliver ship-generated waste (proof of exemption must be presented to the port).

Ships are charged a ship waste fee in accordance with the port’s waste price list, regardless of whether the ship leaves ship waste at the port or not.

There are waste containers for the following types of waste:

paints/solvents
scrap metal
glass containers
plastic packaging
solid oily waste
paper
cardboard
cooking oil
organic waste
mixed waste
batteries/accumulators
WEEE waste

Larger waste units and the disposal of other solid waste must be agreed separately.

The port has a waste management plan and guidelines based on the reception of sorted solid waste.

All emissions into the sea are prohibited in the port area.

Waste management instructions for vessels

A joint waste management facility has been set up for the ports of Inkoo Shipping and Fortum. The system for collecting waste from ships works as follows: the ship’s agent reports the types of waste that the ship will be leaving behind, and waste containers are delivered to the ship accordingly.

Hazardous waste, oily waste, or dangerous waste

All these types of waste are collected directly from the ship according to a prior notification. Notification via the ship’s agent: agency@inkooshipping.fi.

Greywater

Ship wastewater is collected directly from the ship into tank trucks according to a prior notification. Notification via the ship’s agent: agency@inkooshipping.fi.

Food waste from non-EU traffic

Food waste from ships operating outside the EU is collected directly from the ships in accordance with advance orders. Notification via the ship’s agent: agency@inkooshipping.fi. Waste is collected in yellow containers for disposal.
